OGRE GROUPS

Ogre gangs (3 to 4 ogres) and bands (5 to 8 ogres) appear considerably braver than a lone ogre. They rarely retreat from battle, sometimes concentrating their strength against a single foe, and sometimes even attacking groups that display numerical superiority. As with a lone ogre encounter, encounters with a gang or band typically start out with a display of force. The ogres scream, beat their chests and launch javelins at their potential target. They hope to intimidate the opposing group into submission; if the targets do not immediately surrender the ogres follow the display with a sudden and ferocious assault. Ogres do not appreciably alter their tactics when they fight in groups. Each ogre chooses a separate opponent and charges. They strike and then move, hoping to lure their targets into provoking attacks of opportunity. BALOR [ROG] DEMONIC COMMAND UNIT

In the original Dungeons & Dragons pamphlets, this breed of demon was known as "balrog", but the name was revised in subsequent supplements to simply "type VI demon" so as not to infringe on J. R. R. Tolkien's copyright. In second edition AD&D, the name "type VI demon" was revised to "balor," taking the name of the greatest individual of their rank as the name for the entire breed. Also in second edition, balors now had vorpal swords. # Typical physical characteristics In the original Monster Manual, balors are twelve foot tall, winged humanoids with horns and demonic features. They prefer to wield swords and many-tailed whips. They are able to create flames around themselves and shed darkness at will. OROGS

An orog sorcerer and an ankheg Elite orcs, or orogs, are a race of great orcs, possibly mixed with ogre blood. Orogs range between 6 and 6½ feet tall. They are highly disciplined warriors and have their own standards and banners which they display prominently -- it is usually easy to tell when orogs are present among common orcs. Orogs can be found at the vanguard of large orc armies, but rarely on patrol. There is a 10% chance that an orc tribe will have orogs, whose number equals 10% of the male population. (Thus a community of 3,000 male orcs has a 10% chance of having 300 additional orogs.) Small bands of elites (20-80 orogs) will hire themselves out as mercenaries. Orogs have 3 Hit Dice, plate mail (AC 3), and have a +3 Strength bonus on damage dice. For every 20 orogs, there will also be one leader with 4 Hit Dice (THAC0 17). Game : Wrath & Rage Publisher : Green Ronin Series : d20 Reviewer : Wyrdmaster Review Dated : 17th, October 2002 Reviewer's Rating : 7/10 [ Good ] Total Score : 7 Average Score : 7.00 The Races of Renown series from Green Ronin is part of the OGL Interlink program. This means that titles will not clash with others in the OGL Interlink. Wrath & Rage is the Orc and Half-Orc book in the Interlink and it'll probably be the only one. I can only hope that the other companies in the Interlink are producing material as good as Green Ronin's because Wrath & Rage is rather good and before that the Dwarf book, Hammer and Helm , is even better. The introduction here is your typical short RPG supplement introduction. It contains an important point though; the author, Jim Bishop, notes that orcs are often portrayed as filthy, stupid and savage and that's entirely as it should be. ABOUT ORCS--THE ORIGINS OF TOLKIEN'S ORCS, THEIR VARIETIES, ETC.

ARE ORCS IMMORTAL?? That's the big question! According to the Silmarillion in its published form, the elves believed that orcs were first formed from corrupted and ruined elves who had been captured by Morgoth. Elves are immortal, of course (that is, they do not die of old age), while men are given mortality as a special gift of Eru. So presumably Morgoth would not be able to remove elvish immortality when he made his first orcs. Not that he'd really want to, of course, since it's much easier to build up an army if the troops aren't dying off or retiring. By this train of logic, the orcs and goblins seen in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are immortal like elves. It would explain why the Great Goblin and his buddies who capture Bilbo and the dwarves recognize Glamdring and Orcrist, swords which were made in Gondolin TWO AGES before! It would also explain why Shagrat and Gorbag apparently remember the Great Siege of Barad-dur at the end of the Second Age.

ORCS: THE BAD GUYS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S MIDDLE EARTH

I started doing historical reenacting in 1980, and have been involved in the Middle Ages, the American Revolution, the English Civil War, Roman (very intensely since 1991), Ancient Greek, and a couple other things on the side. (See links at bottom of page for evidence.) And now I want to be an ORC! Well, not really BE one, just assemble all the clothing and gear, an "impression", as we say in reenacting. It's only fair, since Tolkien was a big part of the reason I got into reenacting in the first place. So it's kind of like coming home again! Actually, I will be doing at least two impressions for starters. The Uruk-hai were always my heroes, and I loved the ones in the movie. But they do not match Tolkien's admittedly vague descriptions in the books. So, thought I, Do both! TRAINED AND ARMOURED OGRE FROM 1976

Now this is more my type of Ogre. Disciplined to some extent and well equipped with armour and weapons. They care for their arms and armor reasonably well. Ogres can be found in virtually any terrain, including subterranean places. They are ugly-tempered and voracious. Ogres are also fond of treasure, and they will sometimes be found serving as mercenaries in the ranks of orc tribes or evil clerics or joining with gnolls for a profitable raid. Ogres mingle freely with trolls and some giants, and they are at times enslaved by certain demons.

GROGNARDIA: Of Goblins and Pig-Faced Orcs

...This brings me to pig-faced orcs. Again, Gary claimed that the pig-faced version was the result of another miscommunication with his artists -- this seems to have happened a lot -- but I have a great fondness for them nonetheless. Plus, I already have a bunch of Otherworld minis to use, so I figure why not do so? Ive decided that orcs were also magical creations of the Eld -- boars given humanoid form and sentience to be used as easily replaceable cannon fodder. By the same logic, gnolls, rather than being a gnome-troll hybrid as OD&D suggests, are uplifted hyenas. That about covers the basics. Im still pondering what to do about giants and trolls, but Ive already decided that ogres are human beings cursed for having indulged in cannibalism and have now become monstrously ravenous eating machines.

OYNKS

Oynks in tribute to David C. Sutherland III Earlier versions of Dungeons & Dragons depicted OYNKS slightly differently. They were Lawful Evil, and were sometimes described as having porcine snouts (an illustration in the 1977 Monster Manual depicted them with pig-like faces). These are in fact OYNKS a completely different species altogether, with however, similar culture but more discipline and intelligence. # Description: OYNKS appear particularly disgusting because their coloration - brown or brownish green with a bluish sheen - highlights their pinkish snouts and ears. This unadorned wooden drum has the mottled skin of an orc stretched across it. A tattoo is barely perceptible on the dried skin . The tattoo on the drum skin is of an ancient design associated with the Broken Stone tribe of orcs. This tattoo was given only to chieftains of the tribe after they led the tribe to a great victory. This drum matches the description of a legendary war drum used by the Broken Stone tribe of orcs during a storied battle against the wood elves of the No Sky Forest a thousand years ago. The legend tells that when the orcs’ war drum was damaged it was repaired using the flesh of the orc chieftain. The restored war drum led the orcs to a bloody victory over the superior wood elf force. NOV 7, 2001 - ORCS Alive! ORCS established today. ORCS will be the roleplayer's ultimate resource for roleplaying orc characters. ORCS will begin to evolve around player needs, based on player input and support. We will need some staff who can help contribute to the site. Authors of fiction and game material are encouraged to contact us. We will also need someone who can daily check on new developments relating to orcs in Horizons and World of Warcraft. This individual will also be required to check daily on UOSS and UO Events for any Orc related events and fiction. IRON TROLL

This seven-foot troll has dark gray skin, a long, hooked nose and large ears. Its mouth is filled with dozens of sharp teeth and a biliously yellow tongue. Orc Philosophy - Orcs have Feeelings Too!

By and large, orcs do not well appreciate the consequences of their actions beyond the immediate present (a byproduct of their low wisdom). What they do, they do for the here and now, occasionally with some (but not much) consideration for the future. This is probably due to the necessities of their harsh life; one does not have time to think of the future when one must worry about just getting through today. For orcs, however, this reasoning applies even when times are comparatively good and food is plentiful. They continue to worry primarily about now, not later. BADGODS COM

KULUNG'S TALE

I travel the back roads of human civilization, following a quest I do not always understand. Some unseen force, some inner desire, drew me away from my tribe and brought me to the towns and cities of humanity. Does this mean I reject my place as an ogre mage? I do not think so. Instead, I believe I am trying to enhance it. I wander the edges of human settlements, drawn like an insect to the brightly burning torch of civilization. Like an insect, I cannot turn away from the intense heat. Like an insect, I will be destroyed if I get too close to the flame. I am fascinated, captivated, afraid. But the fear flows both ways.
